It was a sunny evening on the last day of summer. As the last streaks of morning faded into the hues of dusk, the car slowed to a stop.

“My mom got you a bracelet.” Said my old au pair, Chloe. Her mom swung the car door open and, gracefully, like a swan gliding across water, got out. We drove away, abandoning Chloe’s mother, and started circling the block.

I controlled my breaths to stop myself from hyperventilating out of pure, sheer suspense. What was this bracelet? Was it perhaps a cursed artefact? Or maybe it was a magical object ready to transport me to another magical world. Or maybe, just maybe, it was simply a piece of jewellery that you pass around and track through its journeys across the world. No, I told myself, Don’t be ridiculous, Wynn, that would never happen.

As me, my own mother and Chloe stood in our car, Chloe’s mom was going through a perilous journey through the streets of Valbonne. She was out there, getting viciously assailed by the baguette-wielders, beret-wearers and hon-hon-hon-ers of France.

Finally, she came back to us. She was brutally and savagely injured from her encounters with… The French.

Hastily throwing herself into the car, she turned to me and spoke, as if possessed.

“Wynn. This bracelet is your destiny. It will guide you through the perils and dangers of life. For it is a piece of jewellery that you pass around and track through its journeys across the world. Wear it, and then, pass it on to the next. You will know when to do it. And you will know who to pass it to. For it is fate, written in the stars.”

She stopped talking. Silence fell upon the car. Chloe’s mom took a second to calm herself down, then, she held out a hand to me, giving me the object of destiny.

I was sceptical. But, with shaky hands, I took the bracelet. I screwed my eyes shut. I braced myself. I held it in my hands for one second, two, three. All of a sudden, a surge of ethereal energy shot through me, sending shivers down my spine. My eyes went white. My body started glowing. I started chanting in ancient runes. And then I fell back down onto the back seat of the car.

Then, I understood. It was my destiny. It was my fate.

I was the chosen one.
