I was given the compass by my American fourth cousin, Kim Brant Wishum, and her husband Gene Wishum, whom I met in real life for the first time yesterday. I got to know Kim’s parents, Karen and Palmer Brant, through a self-study history class on Norwegian emigration to the US at Augustana College in 1998. I knew about them through my mom’s uncle. Palmer was the grandson of Lars Johnsen, who emigrated from Årdal to Wisconsin in 1887. Lars was my grandfather’s uncle. Since my college days in the Midwest I have come back to visit several times, and every time I have visited my American family in Wanamingo, Minnesota. Kim lives in Florida, but her mother and and two sisters still live in Wanamingo. Getting to know my American relatives has been an adventure. Long may it last!
