From Engineer to EMT

Hey there! My name is Josh, and I’m an Emergency Department Technician. Wasn’t always that way, though! I used to be an Electrical Engineering student. Never knew what I wanted to do so I did what one of my old teachers told me; I took what I was good at (math/science) and pursed a job centering around it!

It was smooth sailing, but schooling felt aknots empty. Classes were easy since I’m a giant nerd, but I lacked drive after a certain point. All was well…until I woke up in the back of an ambulance. Apparently I passed out at work from studying full-time school and working 3 part-time jobs while over-compensating with too much caffeine. The EMTs took such care of me while we were transported to the Emergency Department. Their compassion and kindness really stuck with me, and still does till today.

Soon after that whole ordeal, COVID quarantine hit. I couldn’t go to class since the labs were closed and I was forced to take a semester off. It gave me time to ask the big question: What did I really want to do with my life? The answer was apparent: I really wanted to help people. It was then I remembered those gracious EMTs that helped me that day, and so I knew what I had to do.

Although I was 1 semester away from finishing my degree, I dropped everything and immediately landed myself in the accelerated EMT program! Luckily I received my national certification in 3.5 weeks and been working in the Emergency Department ever since.

Not a day goes by that I regret it. To be able to see a patient recover from one of the worst days in their life brings me joy that I can’t begin to explain! And I’ve met the greatest team that I’m lucky to be apart of 🙂

I guess if you’re trying to take anything away from my story, it would be this: “Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean that it’s what you’re meant to do.” Take the leap of faith and follow your heart; Future you won’t be able to thank you enough for it 🙂
