I have been lucky in my life to have mentors in my professional life that weren’t at my company and sometimes they were even with counterparties or people I don’t directly work with. I met 1 mentor at a conference and now 1-2 a year, at a conference, we have dinner and talk about life and work, and they get to serve as a sounding board that only reviews the information I give them. They don’t know my day-to-day life, but they know my values and goals and can give me an honest assessment of where I am compared to where I was when they saw my ~6 months ago.
