My name is Alexis. I’m 19 years old and I’m from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. I got this compass today in hopes of passing it along to someone who could share their story as well.
I grew up in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Secrets don’t stay secret for very long. I lived in a small house with my parents and my sister. Until the day came along that my parents divorced and we became a broken family. I delt with an alcoholic father, and a mother who became addicted to pain pills. It wasn’t always easy. But, we managed. I bounced around from school to school because I wasn’t always a “good kid”.
The age of 14 or so, I became very depressed. Luckily, I never turned to self harm. Instead, I pushed everyone I loved away. It got so incredibly bad that I was hospitalized in 2014. A couple of months later, I attempted suicide. I wasn’t successful because my mom and sister walked in on me. I ended up getting the help I needed, and that’s why I’m here today.
Since then, I’ve still had major changes. I lost my closest friends, went through a terrible heartbreak, and lost family members. But, I’m managing and learning to deal with pain a different way. Now, my mother beat her addiction. My father, still drinks but not as much as he did. Me, I am currently in love with my Bestfriend. He has learned how to deal with my past and present struggles. I’m atrending college and hoping that this story may help the next person. Even if I end up helping one person, then that’ll be enough for me.
